When people think of Assamese silk sarees, the first image that comes to mind is often the rich golden glow of Muga silk. While Muga is undoubtedly Assam’s most celebrated textile, it is only one part of the state’s extraordinary silk tradition. From the elegant softness of Paat to the earthy charm of Toss by Toss and the unique blend of Toss Paat, Assamese silk sarees are available in a variety of weaves, each with its own character and purpose.
At Veda’s, we work closely with skilled artisans across Assam to bring you authentic handwoven Assamese silk sarees that celebrate centuries of weaving heritage. Whether you’re looking for an heirloom-worthy drape or an affordable everyday silk saree, understanding the different types of Assamese silk can help you make the right choice.
What is Silk?
Silk is a natural fibre produced by silkworms and has been treasured for thousands of years for its softness, strength and beautiful natural sheen. Unlike synthetic fabrics, pure silk is breathable, lightweight and comfortable to wear throughout the year.
India is one of the few countries in the world that produces multiple varieties of silk, and Assam occupies a special place in this tradition. The state is renowned for producing some of the world’s finest natural silks, making Assamese silk sarees highly sought after for weddings, festivals and heirloom collections.
What is Tussar Silk?
Tussar silk is produced by wild silkworms and is known for its textured finish and understated elegance. Compared to regular silk, it has a slightly coarser feel with a beautiful natural sheen and earthy appearance.
Assam has developed its own weaving traditions using Tussar, often combining it with Assam Silk to create fabrics that are unique to the region.
Types of Assamese Silk Sarees We Offer
1. Paat (Assam Silk)
One of the biggest misconceptions is the term “Paat Silk.” While many people search online using this phrase, it isn’t technically correct.
In Assamese, Paat simply means silk. It is not a separate variety called “Paat Silk.” When Assamese weavers refer to Paat, they are talking about Assam Silk itself.
Paat is loved for its smooth texture, soft feel and natural lustre. It drapes beautifully while remaining lightweight and comfortable, making it suitable for both special occasions and elegant everyday wear.
Our handwoven Paat sarees are crafted by experienced weavers who continue techniques that have been passed down through generations, ensuring every saree reflects the rich textile heritage of Assam.

2. Toss by Toss (Tussar × Tussar)
“Toss” is simply the Assamese pronunciation of Tussar.
A Toss by Toss saree is woven entirely using Tussar silk in both the warp and the weft. Since the same fibre is used throughout the weave, the fabric develops the distinctive texture and earthy beauty that Tussar is known for.
These Assamese silk sarees are appreciated for their subtle elegance, natural finish and durability. They are perfect for those who prefer understated luxury and handcrafted textiles over heavily embellished fabrics.

3. Toss Paat (Tussar × Assam Silk)
Among the most fascinating Assamese silk sarees is the Toss Paat weave.
Instead of using a single fibre throughout the fabric, the weaver combines Tussar silk and Assam Silk. One is used in the warp while the other is used in the weft, creating a unique balance between texture and shine.
The result is a saree that beautifully combines the rustic appeal of Tussar with the smooth elegance of Paat. This careful blending requires exceptional craftsmanship and gives the fabric a distinctive appearance that cannot be replicated by machine-made textiles.

4. Mixed Paat
Mixed Paat is one of the most versatile varieties of Assamese silk sarees.
Today, many Mixed Paat fabrics available in the market are produced using powerlooms. At Veda’s, however, our Mixed Paat sarees continue to be woven by hand in Assam.
In this weave, the majority of the yarn consists of pure Assam Silk, while a small percentage of artificial silk is incorporated. This is done to make the saree more affordable without compromising the beauty of authentic Assamese handloom.
The result is a saree that retains the elegance of silk while offering a more accessible price point. It is an excellent option for those who want to experience genuine Assamese weaving without investing in a full pure silk saree.
5. Muga Silk
No guide to Assamese silk sarees is complete without mentioning Muga, often called the Golden Silk of Assam.
Muga silk is one of the rarest natural silks in the world and is produced only in Assam. Its signature golden hue is entirely natural and becomes even richer with age. Unlike many other fabrics, Muga grows more lustrous over time, making it one of the few textiles that becomes more beautiful with use.
It is also remarkably durable and can last for generations when cared for properly. For this reason, Muga silk sarees are often treasured as family heirlooms and passed down from one generation to the next.
Its rarity, longevity and natural beauty make Muga the most prestigious and valuable of all Assamese silks.
